Cultural Competency And Treatment

You know by now that forensic treatment settings serve culturally diverse populations. In this course, the terms diversity and culture are broadly defined to include not only race and ethnicity but also religion, gender, physical ability, socioeconomic status, and age. You need to take all aspects of culture into consideration when you select treatment outcomes and approaches. Because culture is so ingrained, cultural-related issues may not be readily apparent to the treatment provider or the offender. However, culture impacts the treatment process whether recognized or not. In order to treat forensic populations effectively, the treatment provider must be aware of the impact of cultural considerations and bring cultural competencies to the treatment process.

To prepare for this Assignment:

· Identify a culturally diverse forensic population that is of particular interest to you.

· Conduct an academic literature search in the Walden Library, and select at least one scholarly article from a peer-reviewed journal that discusses the unique characteristics, considerations, and/or challenges related to working with this population in a forensic setting.

· Consider the unique characteristics of your selected forensic population, and reflect on what you should consider when treating members of this population.

· Consider the challenges that you might encounter when working with a client from your selected population and how you would address these challenges.

The Assignment (1–2 pages):

· Describe the culturally diverse forensic population you researched. Cite and reference the article you selected.

· Briefly summarize the research article, and explain how the role of culture is addressed in the treatment of the specific forensic population in the study.

· Analyze the role of culture in the treatment of forensic populations. Use specifics from your selected research article to support your analysis.

· Explain the challenges you might encounter when working with a client from this population, and state how you would address these challenges.

Note: Be sure to protect the identity of any persons you may refer to.

Comparison Of Forensic Settings

The many different forensic settings such as prisons, jails, outpatient settings, community centers, residential treatment facilities, and specialized treatment centers provide many opportunities for working with forensic populations. Even within these settings, there are specific and differing programs that operate. For instance, a prison might operate an outpatient drug treatment program, a residential drug treatment program, and a sex offender program all in the same facility. In the outpatient setting, a helping professional might be called on to conduct sessions with anger management groups, domestic violence groups, substance abuse groups, and sex offenders after release.

As a forensic treatment professional, assessing and understanding various forensic settings before entering them is critical in developing your professional practice. One way of doing this is to consider the various settings, and compare them based on external resources for forensic populations. For example, how do the available resources compare between a maximum security juvenile correctional facility and a residential juvenile treatment facility? The distinction between these forensic settings and the available resources for each can help you better understand the potential challenges and opportunities in your professional practice.

To prepare for this Assignment:

· Select two forensic settings in your community to compare in this assignment.

· Consider the social support, available resources, and access to treatment for each forensic setting

The Assignment (1–2 pages):

· Identify the two forensic settings you selected from your community.

· Compare (similarities and differences) the settings in terms of social support, available resources, and access to treatment.

· Explain at least one conclusion you drew or insight you gained as a result of your comparison related to your role as a current/future helping professional.

Week 1: Introduction
Welcome to the first week of Treatment of Forensic Populations.

Helping professionals may work years in their professional settings and never think about treating forensic populations such as sex offenders, drug abusers and offenders, or violent offenders. In fact, some helping professionals shy away from such populations, choosing to believe that these people are best helped by remaining “locked up” or left to the resources of a prison treatment setting. Other professionals, however, see the benefits of working with challenging forensic populations. Not just for the person receiving services but also for the greater social good that can come from offering services to forensic populations. As a helping professional, understanding various forensic settings, crimes, and treatments can facilitate advocacy for positive social change as it affects forensic populations and society at large.

This week, you examine the fundamentals of treating forensic populations. You consider a variety of forensic settings that is, the factors outside of treatment that can affect practice such as social support, available resources, access to treatment, and other practice challenges.

Learning Objectives
Students will:
· Apply characteristics of forensic populations to professional practice goals

· Analyze similarities and differences among forensic settings

· Create treatment plans for forensic populations*

Note: This learning objective is introduced in this week and assessed in Week 10 of the course.

3 Pages Of Research Paper With Qualitative Research Annotated Bibliograghy

Some tips to consider for your article summaries:

Method–research design—-qualitative (themes, focus groups, interviews, semi-structured interviews, etc.); quantitative (statistical analysis, instruments, surveys, etc.); mixed methods (combination of qualitative and quantitative and you need to describe both types of data collection in the article). Don’t just state the research design——describe how you know it is that design.

Participants—-initial sample size, how was the sample chosen, how did the participant sample represent the purpose of the study?, what population may have not been included and why not?—–convenience? participants drop out?

Ethical and cultural considerations—Were there language considerations, did the research take place in a country other than the US and what does that mean for using the info in America? Does it offer new information to support diverse or marginalized populations, institutional review board, sensitive to the cultural context and language of the participants? Did the researchers obtain informed consent and what procedures were in place to protect participants?

Data collected—What data was collected from the participants and how was it used to answer the research questions? (name of the assessment instruments, interviews, observations, etc)

Outcomes—what did the researchers learn?—often in the implications, future research, and discussion sections— what was the answer to the study research question? How did the outcome support your approach or add information about your research question and the counseling field?

As always, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to let me know! I hope you have a super holiday weekend! Dr. Laura

you’ll be picking three facts you’ve learned about the issue of gender or gender in schools and sharing those with me.

For each fact I’m looking for:

1. The fact itself.

2. Where you found it. Include a link.

3. Why it stands out to you?

4. What argument might this fact support? Or can you use this information to create an opportunity for learning? For example, in the textbook for EDF1005 the authors share that in 2016, 8% of US high school students report being gay, lesbian, or bisexual. I could use that fact to support developing a program to train high school guidance counselors to support kids who were trying to come out to their parents.
