Discussion Board

1.  What are some resiliency factors that can help some families recover from crisis while others remain in the disorganization phase?

2.  Do you think that couples are too quick to divorce?  If, so what is the reason you think this?

3.  When is it in the best interest of couples and families for there to be a divorce?

Critical Thinking

During the world wars of the twentieth century, Russia gained a reputation for being absolutely ruthless towards its own people.   Russian soldiers would routinely burn villages and crops and shoot livestock in order to leave nothing for enemy soldiers to live on – but this left their own civilians with nothing to live on, either.  How do you think living under Mongol rule centuries ago might have helped make this kind of brutality acceptable to modern-day Russian culture?

Discussion 10

Most of the time, the buyer is wasting his or her money when buying an ergogenic aid to improve performance. Still, even well-educated athletes often take them. What forces do you think might motivate a competitor to “throw caution to the wind” and buy and take unproven supplements sold as ergogenic aids? What role might advertising play?

Discuss how you can apply the concepts learned in this course and (Forensics Intelligence Analysis Course)  to your current or future career. How might the lessons you have learned positively impact your career success?

Assignment: Psychological Aspects Of Criminal Behavior

Assignment: Psychological Aspects of Criminal Behavior

In this week’s Discussion, you examined how mental illness can contribute to criminal behavior. For the Assignment, you now examine this topic in more depth as it relates to the Keen family, while also considering the role of substance abuse in criminal behavior.

As you complete this Assignment, keep in mind that mental disorder is an umbrella term that encompasses psychopathy and other personality disorders, as well as the major disorders discussed in the readings (such as bipolar disorder and depression). Given the persistent stigma of seeking treatment and the lack of affordable treatment options available, many offenders may struggle with mental illness but may not have been formally diagnosed. Therefore, criminal justice professionals must be able to recognize some of the telltale symptoms of specific disorders. The Keen family serves as your practice.

Submit a 750-word paper in which you address the following:

How do the following psychological factors account for the criminal behavior in the case study?

Mental disorders

Psychopathy and other personality disorders

Major mental disorders characterized by mood disturbances and periods of psychosis

Substance abuse

How do the social, behavioral, and cognitive factors you identified over the past 2 weeks interact with the psychological factors listed above to create a cumulative effect on the criminal behavior in the case study?

Support your response with specific examples from the case study, theories from the Learning Resources, and relevant professional experience.

You are the senior civilian advisor to the emergency response manager (ERM). The ERM realizes that the psychological impact of a mass-casualty incident (MCI) can be devastating. The ERM is prepared to handle the incident response with emergency personnel and equipment, but he is unsure if the city is prepared for the psychological aftermath. As his senior advisor, you have been asked to generate a white paper study of past MCIs and their psychological impact.

A suicide bomber has detonated his incendiary device on the Pink Line of the “El” in Chicago, IL. The emergency response teams have quickly extinguished the fire and have begun to treat the wounded. The explosion took place at 5 p.m. on a busy Thursday afternoon. The initial estimates are that 14 people have been killed and 67 wounded. There is also significant infrastructure damage to the Ashland station, impeding traffic on the Green and Pink lines as well as to and from the Illinois Medical District. Al-Shabaab, a terrorist group from Somalia, has claimed responsibility in response to the U.S. Navy’s killing of Somali pirates. Al-Shabaab warns that 2 more explosions will occur somewhere in other major U.S. cities. Their rationale is that three pirates were killed, and therefore three explosions will occur.

As can be expected, the public across the U.S. is in a panic. You are the public relations director for the Deputy Director of Homeland Security. He has asked you to develop a comprehensive white paper explaining the intervention options that the state and federal government can exercise to alleviate public fear and anxiety. He wants to make sure that you anticipate economic impacts at the local, state, and federal levels; use historical incidents if necessary. Your paper will be the basis for an upcoming DHS press conference in which the Deputy Director will attempt to assuage the public’s fear.

You are a research analyst for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The department has received credible intelligence from the NSA, FBI, and Department of Defense that Al Qaeda is planning a biological attack using smallpox against Los Angeles, CA. Although the dispersal method is unknown, it is believed the most likely method will be airborne, through a populated shopping mall’s ventilation system. The lax security at these locations, coupled with a wide social and economic population sampling, will make identifying victims and stopping the spread of the disease difficult. The intelligence indicates that the attack is scheduled to occur within 7–10 days.

Your department has been tasked with reviewing historical incidents of smallpox, including academic assessments of its use as a biological agent for terrorism. Use the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s smallpox Web site as a guide to available resources and current planning (CDC Smallpox Information). With these tools, develop a communication plan that addresses the following:
