Annotated bibliography

  • Assignment #1

    • We are asking you to construct an annotated bibliography of 4 published research papers.
    • We will provide 2 of the papers, you can search for 2 alongside your interests.
    • This should give you practice in:
    • Finding and reading papers.
    • We are not expecting you to be citing other papers in this assignment. Therefore a reference section is not needed.
    • But each paper needs to start with an APA formatted reference as the heading for that section (example on next slide).
    • 2500 words total. Includes all main text.

How to write an annotated bibliography

This is just an example of how you might approach

    the annotated bibliography.

You can adapt this, for example by describing the methods used.

You could also talk about the importance of the

research, or the impact upon the field.

    What we expect

i.e. How to do well in this assignment

    • It is ok to adapt your approach. However, we do expect:
    • Full APA reference as a title for each paper
    • We will assess your understanding of the general area or research question(s) being asked. This should be clear to a broad audience.
    • Evidence that you understood what was done and what the results were. Ie, to summarise the paper. This will be more detailed.
    • If you can convey what was done in the paper to us then you have evidenced you have understood what was done.
    • We will not accept figures (plots of data for example) as we are assessing your ability to understand and summarise.
    • You must evidence your understanding by explaining any complex terms in your own words.

    What we expect

i.e. How to do well in this assignment

    • The focus of this assignment is assessing your understanding (and ability to convey that understanding) of published work in the field of cognitive science.
    • There is no need to include any critical evaluation of the papers – this will be the main focus of the second assignment. Grades will also be influenced by presentational aspects. Attention to detail can be important.
    • You must not simply reproduce the abstract of the paper.
