ASSESSMENT 02 (a)

Video Presentation – Individual

Due Date:

Weighting:     30%

Duration of the video presentation: 15 minutes (with a 10%+- variation)

This video presentation activity requires you to develop strategies and provide meaningful recommendations on a specific ethical requirement identified by your employed company. The assessment allows you to demonstrate your knowledge and application of relevant ethical concepts and skills in searching relevant information for work-related tasks and presentation skills, including creativity. You will also demonstrate skills in critical thinking.

Background Information:

  • You will randomly be allocated one of the unethical business practices shown in the Table below by your lecturer.

Table: Unethical Business Practice and SDG to be achieved
Unethical Business Practice Sustainability Development Goal (SDG) to be Achieved
Violation of animal rights Goal 14- Life Below Water or Goal 15- Life on land
Unethical recruitment practices Goal10–Reduced Inequalities
Non-payment of minimum wage Goal 8- Decent Work and Economic Growth
Violation of child labour Goal 4-Quality Education
Gender Pay gap Goal 5- Gender Equality
Dumping toxic waste into the environment Goal 14- Life Below Water or Goal 15- Life on land
Ignoring safety concerns of the products that are manufactured by the organisation Goal12-Responsible Consumption and Production
Sacking a whistle-blower Goal 8- Decent Work and Economic Growth
Misuse of clients’ monies Goal 16- Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
Tax evasion or avoidance Goal 16- Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

  • You have to identify a listed company (Australian or non-Australian) that has been involved in such an unethical business practice in the world over the past two years, by undertaking some research using Google search, Factiva Database, RMIT Library website etc.
  • Assume that you work in this company. The stakeholders, including the employees of the company request an explanation regarding this unethical business practice carried out by the organisation. The management of the company has asked you to brief the employees of the company explaining the issue and the corrective measurements it has taken so far.

  • Further, to improve the company’s image, the management wants to demonstrate its commitment to change its business practices. Thus, they also wish you to convey that they intend to achieve one of the Sustainability Development Goals (SDG) identified by the United Nations.

In summary, you need to address the following in your presentation:

  • A brief introduction of the company that you have selected;
  • A brief description of the unethical business practice;
  • The corrective actions that the company undertook to prevent such an occurrence in the future with the application of legitimacy theory, stakeholder theory and institutional theory where relevant (You need to (explicitly) apply at least two of these theories); and
  • Recommendations made by you (with the application (explicitly) of at least two of the system-oriented theories where relevant).
  • The strategies that need to be initiated and implemented by the company to achieve Sustainability Development Goal (SDG) to improve the company’s image. Here, you need to select two of the targets of the goal allocated to you as per the above Table. You need to justify theoretically (legitimacy theory, stakeholder theory and institutional theory- using two of those theories explicitly) why the company intends to initiate and implement these targets.

  • SDG website: https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/sdgs (Materials on SDGs are available in week 3 folder).
  • Please refer to the rubric at the end of this document for marking guidelines.
  • You are required to submit a transcript of the above part 3 (corrective actions) 4 (recommendations) and 5 (SDG initiations) requirements (not part 1 and 2).
