Biometrics

3 to 5 pages apa format

Biometrics continues to be an emerging field, and its use continues to evolve in criminal investigations. As you know, fingerprints are considered to be scientifically valid evidence that has been accepted by various courts. However, many of these new technologies have not had enough time to be scientifically recognized as valid means of identifying somebody for criminal trial related purposes. With this in mind, examine some of the challenges with the lesser accurate forms of biometrics, including facial recognition, voice recognition (voice stress analysis), or signature recognition. Prepare a 3–5 page paper that addresses the following questions:

  • Select 1 of the above listed less accurate forms of biometrics and summarize the science behind it (i.e., how it works) and how it can be used in criminal investigations.
  • Identify at least 2 challenges to the selected biometric. In other words, what are the limitations of its use?
  • Provide a hypothetical example of the selected biometric being used in a criminal investigation.
  • Support your work with properly cited research and examples of the selected biometrics applied in the public and private sector.

Death

You are a crime scene investigator on a homicide, and you find that you have several types of evidence that must be photographed, logged, and recovered from that scene. More specifically, there is drying blood on the floor that needs to be collected, a handgun and several shell casing near the victim, and several hairs that are still in the hand of your deceased victim. For this assignment, you are to do the following:

  • Explain how you would recover dried blood, a handgun, shell casings, and hairs that are at the crime scene.
  • What tools you would use to recover the evidence?
  • How would you package the evidence for safekeeping and transportation?
  • What types of tests could be performed on this evidence at the crime lab?
  • Provide APA citation and references for your material.

Week 1 Case Study

Week 1 Case Study

Scenario:

Rob Banks graduated from the police academy and is now a rookie officer who is starting his six months of training with Field Training Officer, Justin Case.

Officer Case is supervising Officer Banks during the 4 p.m. to midnight shift.  At 11:00 p.m., Officer Banks and Officer Case are dispatched to a burglary in progress at the University City Ball Park concession stand.

Jane Chatman was walking her dog near the ballpark when she heard a loud crash near the concession stand.  Chatman walked toward the concession stand to investigate the noise.  As Chatman neared the concession stand, she saw three teenage boys ransacking the place.  Chatman quietly walked away from the concession stand and called the police department to report the burglary.

When Officer Banks and Officer Case arrive at the ballpark, the perpetrators had already fled. Officer Banks said, “The concession stand is a mess it appears the perpetrators have stolen numerous items, where do we start?”

Officer Case replied, “Officer Banks, first, I want you to contact the police dispatcher and have them get in touch with the director of the ballpark and ask the director to respond to the concession stand.  We need the director to tell us what is missing and the value of the items for our report.”

Chatman saw the officers arrive at the ballpark and walked over to the concession stand and said, “Hi, my name is Jane Chatman and I am the one who called the police department to report the burglary.”

Officer Case thanked Chatman for reporting the crime, and told Officer Banks, “Go ahead and get Chatman’s information and see if she will write a statement as to what she saw.  Remember to ask her to give you a description of the juveniles she saw.”

While Officer Banks was writing down Chatman’s information for the police report, he saw Officer Case picked up a piece of double-bubble gum off the counter in the concession stand.  Officer Case then removed the gum from the wrapper, tossed the wrapper on the floor, put the gum in his mouth, and walked over to meet the director of the ballpark who just arrived at the scene.

Chatman looks at Officer Case and then back at Officer Banks and shakes her head back and forth, indicating her disappointment in what just occurred.

After getting all the information from Chatman and the director, Officer Banks and Officer Case return to the police station to complete their police report.

Officer Case continued to chew the bubble gum and blew bubbles with the gum while typing his report.

American National Government

This week, you will determine a policy for your Final Paper and begin your research regarding the policy of your choosing. It is important to remember that your paper should focus on a specific policy and that your paper will need to address the following components:

  • Historical and constitutional basis for the American government’s structure
  • The system of checks and balances
  • The various roles (e.g., public opinion, media, special interest groups, etc.) concerning public policy and elections
  • The voting system and election process

Please watch this video that walks through the steps of the paper development and expands on the four required sections of the paper.

Prepare: Since this is the first step in developing your Final Paper, it is recommended that you review POL201 Assignment GuidePreview the document before beginning this assignment. A model POL201 Final Paper templatePreview the document and the POL201 Research Guide are both provided for you within the online classroom to utilize when completing your Final Paper. You should also review the Week 2 Policy and Your Life discussion and the list of some possible policies found in the Week 2 DQ and Final Paper Policy ExamplesPreview the document in your online classroom, before completing this assignment.

The first step to researching your Final Paper is selecting a specific policy for your paper, which was part of the Week 2 Policy and Your Life discussion. Your paper must focus on a specific policy that focuses on an aspect of the United States government and ideally, that relates to your major and future career. You should be able to find research that will allow you to support your ideas. If you have questions or would like your instructor to approve your policy, please email them directly and/or discuss with your instructor and colleagues in the Week 2 Policy and Your Life discussion forum.

Reflect: Once you have found a topic that interests you, you will begin the research for your Final Paper this week. In addition to establishing your topic and the thesis for your paper, you will also provide an Annotated Bibliography (Links to an external site.) for four of the sources you intend to utilize to support your Final Paper. Each annotation should be a minimum of one full paragraph (five sentences) in length and should explain what the source discusses and how this links to your Final Paper topic. While your textbook can be utilized as a source, it does not count towards your four sources for this assignment. As your paper progresses, it is expected that you will find more sources to support your ideas for a minimum of eight sources are required for the final, with a minimum of five of those sources from the Ashford University Library databases. This research is necessary to develop a strong Final Paper. The following resources will help you to use the library effectively to find sources for your paper:

For guidance on using library databases to locate scholarly, peer-reviewed articles click on Help! Need Article (Links to an external site.)and then click the “How Do I Search for Articles” button from the Main Menu.

For guidance on identifying the types of sources you can use for academic research, watch this interactive tutorial on Evaluating Sources.

The Scholarly, Peer Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.) table offers additional guidance on appropriate source types. If you have questions about whether a specific source is appropriate for this assignment, please contact your instructor. Be sure that the sources you are utilizing to support your ideas are valid, reliable, and not overly bias. For information on identifying information bias, watch this interactive tutorial on Subjective and Objective Statements (Links to an external site.).

Write: To complete the assignment, download the Week 2 Annotated Bibliography WorksheetPreview the document from the online classroom to your computer, fill it out, and submit it via Waypoint. Within the worksheet, you will address your policy, find four scholarly sources to support your policy, and explain the significance of each of your four sources. Please be sure that each section is at least a full paragraph (minimum of five sentences) in length and fully addresses the questions presented. All references should be listed in full APA format and cited appropriately.

Texas Legislature

Every August, Texas has a “tax free weekend.” School supplies and school clothes can be purchased for a few days without the addition of Texas’ 6 1/4 % sales tax – which, around Houston, is really 8 1/4% because of the additional penny for the City of Houston and the additional penny for METRO.

What about college textbooks? Have you priced them lately? Ours isn’t too bad (free, right?), but some of my students pay nearly $300 for some science and engineering books.

Representative Terry Canales (D-Edinburg) wants to cut college students in on the action before each regular semester.

Go to the Texas Legislature’s website, https://capitol.texas.gov/Home.aspx and look up House Bill 21. Hint: Make sure you use the little pull-down menu to select the current legislative session (86R-2019 – that’s the 86th Regular session of the Texas Legislature) and type HB21 in the search window.

What do you think? Write a 2 – 5 page essay explaining this bill and the problem it’s trying to solve. Explain the advantages and disadvantages with this approach. What happened to the bill? If you were a legislator, how would you have voted on this bill?

Submit in Word. Cite your sources.

Political Science Essay

This assignment requires you effectively demonstrate core competencies of critical thinking, communication, social responsibility, and personal responsibility within the context of engagement in the U.S. political process.

Imagine that you have been hired by a nonprofit, Young Voices, to develop a strategy for increasing voter participation among new voters (specifically, aged 18 to 25).  You should carefully review the lecture and reading related to why people vote (and, conversely, why some people don’t vote) to develop a plan for encouraging young people to vote.  The nonprofit is short on cash and other resources, so they are looking for a SINGLE policy to promote.  You must

  1. Identify one clear reason why young people vote at lower rates than do older people, demonstrating an understanding of how different groups of people are differently situated in our political system.
  2. Articulate one clear policy that would address the problem you just identified.
  3. Explain how your policy is related to the reason for low turnout and rectifies the disparity.
  4. Explain why disparate turnout by young people is or is not an actual problem for a democratic society.

While you may use outside materials, it is not necessary.  If you do use outside materials, you should provide an adequate reference/citation.  Similarly, you should cite to our readings and lectures where appropriate.  (For citations to class material, “Textbook Chapter 3″ or ” Lecture.ppt, August 27, 2020″ is sufficient.  For citations to outside materials, I need enough information to actually find the source.

You will turn in a single .doc, .docx, or .pdf version of your essay.  While there is no hard-and-fast rule about essay length, I cannot imagine a coherent and complete essay that is less than 300 words, and I see no need to go on for more than 500 words.

This is not meant to be an exhaustive description of the policies you are promoting. Provide enough detail that a reasonable person familiar with this literature will understand your policy and the causal connection between your policy and turnout.
