Commodity Chain Analysis

Commodity Chain Analysis
Step 1:  Worksheet

Researching a Commodity Chain

Please use this worksheet in conjunction with the instructions provided in Canvas to guide your commodity chain research.  Use the “check” boxes throughout the worksheet to ensure that you are setting yourself up for success in Step 2 of this assignment.

Below is an example of how the “site” boxes should be completed when you come across them.  Feel free to add additional site boxes anywhere you wish.  Occasionally you won’t have information to complete some element of the box.  That is OK.  Sometimes, you will not need as many site boxes as are provided.  Feel free to delete extra site boxes, but note that there is a requirement of having a minimum of 8 different sites on your map, so you should have at least that many on this worksheet.

Site:  Boeing 787 parts assembly plant

Site Box Elements Site Box Data & Explanations
Name Boeing South Carolina
Location North Charleston, South Carolina
Economic role/relation in the commodity chain Assembly of component parts; site of labor
Details: what? when? where? who? The Boeing South Carolina plant is where all of the component parts of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner are put together.  The factory is one of the largest employment centers in the state employing approximately 7,000 workers and contractors.  The plant opened in 2011.
Connecting themes, concepts, and histories from class or your research Following the 2008 economic crisis, state and local governments wanted to help boost employment so offered Boeing a sizeable incentive package (worth between $450 and $900 million) to open a plant there.  In addition to the tax incentives, South Carolina has relatively low levels of unionization (unions and strikes were major issues for Boeing when they were making the Dreamliner in Everett, WA).  This demonstrates a race-to-the-bottom or downward harmonization within the US.
