You have all been allocated to groups of 5 to 6 group members for assignment 2, the group presentation. Please contact your fellow group members using the group function on blackboard. You can use the blackboard group functions also to exchange files, share ideas or keep a group diary. When you work on the group presentation, please consider that you study on different programmes/modules with different workloads/deadlines towards the end of the semester. So we recommend that you discuss and clarify your availability/workload in a first meeting of the group. Please also consider that some of you are studying in different time-zones, when arranging meetings We suggest that you arrange at least three group meetings via video chat software of your choice (zoom/teams/whatsapp):
- a first meeting getting to know each other and discussing/deciding on the country you want to choose as a case, and who wants to look at which literature.
- a second meeting discussing interim findings/readings and who wants to cover which section of the presentation
- a third meeting combining the presentation segments and making sure the presentation has a coherent flow and the elements fit to each other. You should also decide who will submit the file on turnitin on behalf of the group. Make sure you state the group number in the submission and all student id numbers on the first page of the presentation.
Please ensure that all decisions by the group are recorded in a group diary at each meeting. Advice on recording the presentation is provided at the end of this document.
Important: Normally all group members get the same group mark. But if there are problems with the contributions of some group members we can on request by the group conduct a peer review. This, in combination with the information from the group diary, may result in different marks for group members.

Assignment 2: Group oral presentation on the international diffusion of planning ideas
Choose a country not covered in the lectures and discuss the influence of international planning ideas on its planning system. Provide and critically discuss:
- A general overview and brief history of the country’s planning system;
- The influence of other planning systems on the country’s planning framework, briefly considering the mechanisms of diffusion, how ideas and practices of planning in the country are changed during diffusion, and the wider socio-economic and institutional context in which diffusion is taking place;
- Contemporary planning issues of concern drawing on case studies; and
- Bibliography of documents and publications used to inform the presentation (including academic and policy publications, as well as any web sites and other media sources)
We will explain details of the group allocation via blackboard. We aim for a group size of 5 group members.
Length: 15 minutes presentation with recorded audio.
Presentation date: Prepare PowerPoint slides with audio recording. Each group member has to contribute to the presentation. These slides will be presented and discussed on Wednesday 16th December 2020, 09:00-12:00. Details if this takes place on campus or in virtual sessions are still to be confirmed.
One group member has to upload the presentation file via Turnitin by 2pm on Tuesday 15th December 2020. Please upload the Powerpoint file with audio recording and not a PDF file.
As assignment 2 states each group should choose a country not covered in the lectures to discuss the influence of international planning ideas on its planning system. Also, for assignment 3 if you focus on one country for the essay, this should not be a country covered in the lectures. This means that you should not choose any country listed as a case study in the timetable of the module outline. Some further advice on choosing the country
- We strongly recommend choosing a country for which you will find enough material and references to support your presentation. If you have any doubts – ask us.
- Popular countries in previous years were Japan, Denmark, Australia, South Korea, India, Taiwan, Indonesia, Poland or Sweden.
- Once decided one group member should send an email naming that country to the course convener Andreas Schulze Baing.
Guidance on recording group presentation:
- Please use Powerpoint to record your presentation with audio. As a student of the University of Manchester you have access to Office 365 which includes the latest version of Powerpoint. Each of you can record segments separately, and then you can combine them by copy/paste into a final presentation. - Please make sure that one group member submits the Powerpoint file and not a PDF copy, as otherwise we won’t hear the audio recording.
- Think of a presentation the same way you would for an essay
- Introduction (what are you going to talk about)
- Start broad and work to the more specific issues
- Conclusion (what are the key points)
- Think about developing a structure and narrative
- Only say what you need to say (don’t waffle!)
- Think about how much time you have when developing the content
- If you can want to illustrate a point you make with a picture, chart or diagram, do it
- Write down notes to make sure you cover the content in enough detail
- Include references where used, for example (Healey, 2010), and give page number if you are directly quoting. The end of the presentation should list all detailed references. Also include sources for images you use.
- Less is more, avoid slides overloaded with details
- Talk to a small number of bullet points on each slide
- Avoid garish fonts
- Make sure font is big enough
- Use slide transitions sparingly
- Think about font and slide colours, they often look different on someone else’s screen than on yours. Try using clear contrasts. For example black text on white background always works.
- Sign-post your presentation with headers (introduction, history, etc.), so your audience knows where in the presentation you are.
- Practice before recording
- Time yourself
- If using a script think about how you move from slide to slide
- Speak clearly, don’t mumble
- Try to control bad habits (ummm’s, swaying)
- Try to think of it as a conversation… talking to someone relax….
