Research Proposal

Assessment 3 – Research Proposal (Individual) (40%)

  • Do NOT collect any data for this assessment
  • Task: create a research design for investigating one of the issues identified in the group assignments (or an alternative if you wish that is related to business/management/industries i.e. not a natural science or medical science study) The design proposal needs to:
    • Briefly describe the problem or issue or being investigated o State a research question
    • Detail the proposed methods for answering the research question, explaining how and why these methods are appropriate for the research question. o The full report should be 2500 words (excluding references and appendices). See below for suggested word allocation and where best direct your efforts.
    • The report should reference a minimum of eight (8) academic journal articles. These articles may support the topic or relate to the chosen methodologies. These are to be included along with any other (e.g. grey) literature references on the topic.
    • Use Harvard style reference format (see Library for further details here).

The report should be presented in an appropriate format:

  1. Introduction (approx. 250 words)
    1. Background to the problem and relevance to industry
    2. Outline of what is included in the design proposal

  1. Literature review (approx. 650 words)
    1. Criteria for the literature reviewed
    2. Critical review of the literature
    3. Identification of gaps in the literature or new directions

  • Research Question, Aims, and Ethical Considerations (approx. 300-500 words)
    1. A statement of your research question and explanation of how it relates to the literature reviewed
    2. The aims and intended outcomes of your proposed research
    3. Any relevant ethical considerations related to your aims and/or question

  1. Method (approx. 1100 words)

Proposed method 1

  1. Participants if relevant (including a description and selection procedures)
  2. Research design
  3. Data collection plans
  4. Strengths and weaknesses of this proposed method

Proposed method 2

  1. Participants if relevant (this might be the same as above)
  2. Research design
  3. Data collection plans
  4. Strengths and weaknesses of this proposed method

  1. Conclusion: Implications and limitations (250 words)

  1. Reference list

  • Appendices
    1. Copies of an interview guide AND/OR survey you have designed
    2. Participant permission form/information sheet
