Social and Cultural Issues of Interactive Digital Media (KIT611) Assignment 3 (individual) “Critical Evaluation”

Social and Cultural Issues of Interactive Digital Media (KIT611)

Assignment 3 (individual) worth 20% of your total marks

“Critical Evaluation”

Instructions:

The issue of misinformation distributed via interactive digital media has been front and centre for the past 12 months. From misinformation spread during the CoViD-19 pandemic, to the results of the 2020 United States election, to misinformation about vaccines, we have seen a number of notable consequences from the spread of this misinformation.

For Assignment 3 you need to look at the issues of misinformation as it pertains to interactive digital media. Using some of the above examples as a start point, you should look at why misinformation spreads so easily on interactive digital media platforms, including niche media channels and social media.

After examining some of the impacts, you should make some suggestions about what can be done, or what is being done, to combat the spread of misinformation.

Your assignment should identify some of the challenges faced by platforms in policing misinformation and in creating ICT systems that can help identify misinformation.

You should focus on what interactive digital media companies can do as opposed to what individuals or journalists can do to address this problem.

SCU’s Trust project[1] is a good starting point as are articles like Audiences’ acts of authentication in the age of fake news: A conceptual framework[2].

Please submit your essay in PDF format to the Assignment 3 drop box on MyLO by the due date. Please include name and student ID in the document!

This assignment should consist of no more than 2,000 words and should be in standard English, free of grammar and spelling errors, and set in a 12 pt font. Referencing should follow Harvard style.
