Individual chapters from Powers, which include the assigned pages, are now posted to the course iLearn site under Course Materials, in case you have problems with connectivity to the Library website.

I have changed some of the pages you need to focus upon, and this has slightly reduced the total number of pages you need to read. Here they are:

pages 25-46, chapter 1

pages 47-54 (start mid-page at “the tug of war….”; read thru mid-page 54) & 59-63 (Political Power), in chapter 2

Choose and answer ONE of the following questions.


Powers describes balls, operas, and dance parties given in the French Caribbean from the 1760s thru the 1780s, especially in the selected pages between 59 and 107. What were the attendance policies and practices for these events with regard to colored, black, and white people, free as well as enslaved? Did the policies and practices reinforce social structure and status for these people, or resist social structure and status, or something else? Use 2-3 *specific* examples from the reading to anchor your discussion, and be sure to cite page numbers from which you directly quote and/or paraphrase.


First, describe and discuss the African dance type “calenda” as reported by Jesuit missionaries and the French writer-traveler Moreau de St.-Méry, in selected pages 47-54. What kind of movement did the dance utilize? What kinds of messages did it signal, according to the missionaries and Moreau de St.- Méry, and how did it serve its performers, according to Powers? Then discuss, compare, and contrast how in the 1770s and 80s, the emerging creole operas Soliman II or the Three Sultanas and Les Créoles africaines, ou les effets de l’amour utilized the calenda and other African-attributed dances (start of chapter 6)
